A New Beginning Awaits You

Weeks ago, people are so much exhilarated by the holiday vibe sizzling in the air and bedazzled over the parties hither and yon. The captivating Christmas embellishments twinkle almost here and there, colorful lights flicker and illuminate the unadorned walls, and various joyous chants about the season can be heard practically everywhere. Just a few days ago, we welcomed 2018 with hope for a better, happier, and more productive year, and it felt like 2017 ended in a blink of an eye. Will it be a memory you could grin looking back at or is it going to be simply a mundane chunk of your past?

Musing over in the last year, I wonder if I was able to spend 2017 with utmost effort to make it worth remembering. This thought lingered on for days as I fail to find some sense in my own perplexity, but as I pondered over this atypical rumination, I profess myself baffled by my own flowing thoughts. In spite of the great demand of time at work, I allocate some time for a few breathing spells. With this, I never fail to end my week without doing any of these — reading a book, watching any Harry Potter movie, or wandering about the malls. The other night, I finished reading Nicholas Sparks’ A Walk to Remember. Jamie, the main character in the story, inspired me as she made the most of her remaining days – she was young but sick and dying. She had this not-so-common bucket list she wished to do before she died. It reminds me of the usual essay question I encountered a lot when I was in elementary, “What will you do if you only have a year to live?” What, indeed? I recalled including going to places I have never been to, eating my favorite food, spending more time with my loved ones, and candidly being happy. As I come to further recognize how short life is, the more I realize to apprise each moment as if I only have a day to live.

In a random conversation with one of my colleagues, I remembered her say that she was sincerely grateful for this year because of the realization that had hit her at the most tragic days of her life — life is as short as the length the Sakura tree bloom in Spring. I was astounded to learn what she has been through as her revelation filled my heart with awe. She had braved to fight against the infamous state of depression and let’s face it, only a few tough souls win at this kind of battle. I wonder how overwhelming it could have been for her after getting through something dreadful, and no matter how hapless the journey might be, I believe she learned something from it – and it is a lesson you cannot actually acquire at school no matter how much you pay attention to your teacher.

This year has been a dizzying roller-coaster ride for me, not to mention how challenges seem to coincidentally be in my way. I know some people don’t believe in such thing because they reckon that everything happens for a purpose. Despite these “coincidences” some people believe otherwise, I remain strong and an optimist. A friend once told me that we can never control the things that happen to us, but we can manage the way we react to them. Like what J.K Rowling wrote in one of her famous books, “It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities”.

No matter how awful or amazing 2017 has been, remember that 2018 is waiting for you with arms wide open. Forget about brooding over what went wrong, forgive those people who never asked for forgiveness, and don’t bother about regretting the inescapable life’s challenges. So, put your mind at ease and don’t fret, simply bear in mind that a new beginning awaits you.
